U.S. Congressman David Schweikert
Arizona Economic Follow-Up
After last week's economic update I received a few requests for this week's newsletter update. In the chart below the last six quarters are displayed to show the difference in positive change for wages. The chart's green bar measures the "real earnings" which at first would show slowing real wage growth but this is using unreliable wage and inflation measures. The red column presented is using the Employment Cost Index, which provides a direct measure of wages, adjusted for inflation.

This second chart is depicting Unemployment rates for the Phoenix area including Maricopa County listed third. The light blue column shows the unemployment rate in July of 2017 compared to the dark blue column showing the unemployment rate in July of 2018. You can look at this data and more at

Chairman Jerome Powell

A fascinating conversation with Chairman of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell. It was an honor to meet him and to get a chance to discuss topics including the importance of the United States long term growth and the stability of our labor force. A special thanks for his patience towards my request to take photos with some Arizona constituents who had just stepped into the office for a Capitol tour.

I want to express my support for Governor Doug Ducey’s decision in appointing former Senator Jon Kyl to fulfill Senator John McCain’s Senate seat. I appreciate that Sen. Kyl will take the legacy of Senator John McCain with the utmost seriousness and respect, and I look forward to working with Sen. Kyl to help support Arizona and further the conservative agenda.
This week on the House floor I had the privilege of hearing my colleagues memories of Senator McCain and to reflect on my memories with the late Senator.

Great discussion with the AZ Farm Bureau discussing agriculture technology, the importance of the Farm Bill to US farmers, and how farmers want trade, not aid!
Each week in Washington I have had the pleasure of holding an Open House for any constituent groups to join my D.C. staff to discuss legislation and issues affecting Arizonans. If you are in D.C. please be sure to reach out to my D.C. office for the Open House schedule to join the discussion.
This week I attended an event sponsored by the USO to assemble care packages for deployed military spouses. The event was a huge success and I am appreciative the USO invited me.
